I am interested in learning about legitimate grants for small businesses (or women owned businesses) to help with start-up costs for equipment (computers, fax machine, printer, etc.) and advertising. I have a business plan, Tax ID Number and all of the basics completed, however, I need help with additional funding without having to take out a loan until I gain clients. I’ve been thinking about opening a business mowing lawns in the summer and plowing snow in the winter now for the last 2 years now, except I’ve never actually worked in the industry. I was just wondering if anyone could give me any information about the way that these business owners contract their business. Do they get a year or two contract with each business or is it by the job? Also, in either of the two scenarios how much money would be considered going rate to their customers? My husband is a very experienced HVAC technician and we need more income but he doesn’t want to leave his current job for the government since it is enjoyable hours and nice benefits. I am wondering if I can start an HVAC business and hire techs to do the actual labor and my husband can be a consultant resource. Do I need an HVAC license to actually own the business even if I am not doing any hands on work? What if my husband has the license? I would be the business manager and scheduler.

I want to start up a gym. I have decent credit, but not the work background to have the extra cash flow. I have a business plan on how the business will grow and expand and have been apart of building another gym in a neighboring town from the idea stage. To start up the gym I would need about 160,000 dollars for the building and all of the equipment and the cost to start the business. My husband owns a small transportation business (very similar to what taxis do), and we are always looking for great ways to cheaply or freely advertise. I do his business cards, flyers, and other items. But it seems that nothing beats a few good listings. Phone books, however, are so awfully expensive. And I was wondering if anyone could recommend some sites on which I could post listings / ads for his business. Cheap would be fine. But as everyone knows, nothing beats free stuff. So are there any such sites offering free business listings / ads that you would recommend?
